Behind many of the advances we now take for granted are people who were prepared to think differently. They challenged accepted wisdom, questioned established practice and pursued ideas that others dismissed. Some took extraordinary risks. Others faced criticism, ridicule or rejection from their peers.But what they shared was the courage to look at a problem differently, and the persistence to keep going when the evidence pointed somewhere new.
Public Health Heroes is a short video series celebrating some of these pioneers and the stories behind the discoveries that helped shape medicine and public health.........But these aren't conventional history lessons!
The stories are brought into the modern world with a little creative licence...contemporary references, social media, memes, humour and the occasional “what if this happened today?” moment. Such as: How would Ignaz Semmelweis have handled his critics on social media? What is social media existed in the time of John Snow?
Each episode is deliberately short. Rather than covering every date, detail and historical debate, the videos capture the key story, the breakthrough and why it mattered. A little history. A little humour. And a celebration of the people who dared to think differently.
JOHN SNOW - THE BATTLE WITH CHOLERA
In mid-19th century London, John Snow, a bold physician, challenged the idea that Cholera was caused by bad air, proving instead that contaminated water was to blame.
His investigations led to groundbreaking discoveries, laying the foundation for modern epidemiology.
INGNAZ SEMMELWEIS - THE SAVIOUR OF MOTHERS
Semmelweis was a Hungarian physician who proved that washing hands can save the lives of mothers. However, his attempts to change existing ideas and processes were unsuccessful.
Today, handwashing is recognised as one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infections and a cornerstone of infection control.
EDWARD JENNER - THE FIGHT TO END SMALLPOX
Vaccination is one of public health’s greatest successes and has saved millions of lives. Smallpox, one of the most devastating diseases that affected humanity was successfully eradication through vaccination.
Edward Jenner was an English doctor who played a crucial part in the history of vaccination.
