The Public Health Academy
The Public Health Academy was founded by Dr Ranil Appuhamy as a place to learn and explore public health in ways that are memorable, practical, impactful and easy to understand. It brings together a growing collection of free learning resources and uses innovative and sometimes unconventional approaches, including animated videos, interactive activities, games, music, storytelling and immersive digital experiences, to explore key public health concepts in different ways.
The Academy also provides professional services in public health education and training, partnering with government departments, public health units and other organisations to design and deliver online and onsite learning
Meet the Founder
Dr Ranil Appuhamy - Founder and Principal Consultant
Dr Ranil Appuhamy is a Public Health Physician with more than 20 years of experience across clinical medicine, public health practice, education and global health. His work has spanned communicable disease control, environmental health, health promotion, policy development, tobacco control and multicultural health.
After completing his medical training in New Zealand, he worked in hospitals across the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales and Victoria before specialising in public health. He obtained his Public Health Medicine Fellowship in 2011 and holds a Master of International Public Health from the University of Sydney and a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
Dr Appuhamy has led responses to a wide range of communicable disease outbreaks and has contributed to scientific publications, policies, guidelines and technical documents at state, national and international levels. He has served as an executive member of the Communicable Disease Network Australia the peak national public health body for communicable diseases.
His global health work has included consulting for the World Health Organization, supporting implementation of the International Health Regulations in the Western Pacific Region and later contributing to global learning and capacity development through WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme.
Education has been a major focus throughout his career. He has taught at the Australian National University, is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Griffith University’s School of Medicine, and has supervised trainee public health physicians. He is the creator of Let’s Learn Public Health, a widely used education channel with more than 160,000 subscribers and over 14 million views, with videos used by universities, schools, public health organisations and international learning platforms.
Dr Appuhamy is also the founder of the Public Health Academy, established to make public health learning more memorable, practical, engaging and easy to understand. The Academy combines innovative approaches such as video, interactive learning, games, music and storytelling.
